I'm often amazed at which sites make serious money.
When coming up with a website concept I busily try to get that perfect domain name and come up with a great design but some sites seem to prove that this isn’t necessary.
ianag.com is one of these sites.
SITE DESCRIPTION
ianag.com is an old domain name going back as far as 2001.
Originally used by the “I Am Not A Geek” web site who provide computer hardware and software news and reviews, for the past 6 months ianag.com has been a game site that also provides video clips.
It uses the commercially available GameScript system as it’s content management system. GameScript is available to purchase from US$79.99 to $US319.99 (see www.gamescript.net). The developers claim that using the script it’s not uncommon to make over $100 per day.
Up until April 2006 this site was owned by the developers of the GameScript system and used as a demonstration system for people to see the script in action prior to purchasing it.
REVENUE
The previous owners of the site say that they know a lot of tricks to gain high revenue. If this site's revenue is anything to go by they certainly do, and this was apparently only one of their sites.
Revenue of US$10,000/month is obtained through the use of Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN). In just one day they made US$700! For those who don't know, YPN is similar to Google Adsense however it’s still in it’s beta form and sign-up is limited (eg. must be a US citizen and your application is subject to approval).
Not only has this site generated some serious monthly income, the site was sold in April 2006 for an undisclosed amount, but as a bid was seen for US$55,000 we assume it sold for at least this amount.
Not bad money if you can get it.
CONCEPT / DESIGN
No offense to the owners but from a review point of view this site isn't that impressive. It’s actually surprising that the site returns the income that they state.
Firstly the domain name doesn’t actually relate to the site, as stated earlier it was used for the “I Am Not A Geek” website for quite some time. Unless you’re actually aware of what it stands for the majority of people wouldn’t find ianag.com an easy domain to remember.
The design isn’t special either, because it’s a demo site for GameScript it uses the default GameScript graphics and text.
This all means that it doesn’t really stand out for all the other similar sites out there. And there are 100s and 1000s of them!
It’s also dissappointing to see that the layout was sacrificed to display as many ads as possible. For example when trying to play a game the area for displaying the game isn't large enough to see the entire game because of the ads placed all the way around the game. Only if you use the "full screen" can you actually play the game.
Despite these things the site is extremely popular. The aim of this site is to get as much traffic as possible and then make money through YPN. If it succeeds at this then who cares what the domain means, how pretty the pages are and how games are displayed - apparently it doesn't bother the visitors to this site.
HOW THEY DO IT
Game & movie sites seem to be two types of sites which are currently do very well in attracting large amounts of traffic, and by combining both these together this site has ensured that it gets LOTS of traffic.
This site is also the demo site for GameScript which could have only helped in attracting traffic, however from the referrer statistics this doesn't contribute a significant amount of ongoing visits. 89% of traffic is reported to come from direct links and bookmarks and only 6% coming from search egines.
The content of this site is impressive. There are over 1,000 games and movies available. You can be stuck on this site for hours.
The site maximises their YPN clicks using a number of “tricks”.
Firstly the ads appear like any other content on the page and are blended in very well, but still within the YPN Terms of Service. They’ve even gone as far as placing a graphic beside their Yahoo Ads which makes them appear the same as their game and movie links.
And it’s not just any image either, they’ve placed a graphic of a topless woman beside the ads.
It still clearly states "Ads by Yahoo" and to me it's obvious it's an ad, but since many web sites are now employing this tactic I guess a lot of people click on them thinking it’s a video.
YPN ads are placed whereever they fit. When playing a game for example, there are 10 seperate ads displayed around the edge of the game. I’ve got no idea why you’d click on an advertisement for an attorney while playing a game of space invaders - unless you’re contemplating suing the owners for the R.S.I. you’ve obtained from playing all the addictive games!
I think the best way to learn is to have a look at their site and see what you can replicate on your site.
LONG TERM
This site relies on YPN to make it’s money and this can be risky as it’s future is unclear. People claim that while YPN is in beta they are paying higher than what they would once it becomes a “released” product.
This site also employs some rather devious tactics to get people to click the ads – i.e. using the graphics. Other site owners have reported Yahoo cracking down on these tactics so potentially this site’s revenue could drop once they are forced to remove these tactics.
Having said that, this site has high amounts of traffic. With this level of traffic there will always be money to be made – with or without YPN.

The most suppressed secret in history has been some knowledge about our own bodies. Excitation of the parasympathetic nervous system, also called the “muscarinic” nervous system, overrides the brain’s inhibitory neurons thereby awakening the brain to more that the normal 10% brain use. LSD does the same thing by blocking seratonin, the neurotransmitter of the brain’s inhibitory neurons. The largest nerves of the parasympathetic nervous system are the left and right vagus nerves. The vagal trunk emerges from the brain through the nasal pharynx, divides into the left and right vagus nerves, which descend into the lower body of flesh, not through the spine. Plexuses of the parasympathetic nervous system branch out from these vagus nerves. When these plexuses and nerves are stimulated the stimulation spreads to the brain causing more than 10% brain use. All this can be simply printed on one bumper sticker, “Vagal stimulation is as effective as LSD”. To put in contemporary terms, the mental effects of the “choking game” are not caused by oxygen content, they are caused by vagal stimulation. In 1959 an expelled lodge member told my friend and I all the secrets. The lodge uses Biblical symbolism. They represent the human body by the Temple of Solomon. The Holy of Holies represents the nasal pharynx through which the vagal trunk emerges into the lower body. The letter G secretly represents the Hebrew word “gorun”, throat. The compass represents a circle, the square represents a line, the combination represents squeezing a circle into a line, the quadrature of the circle. In 1962 I wrote this and lesser secrets in a term paper I titled “Superstition in America”. I got a 98% for it, and graduated with honors. Later, the instructor of that class sold that term paper in the term paper black market, the wrong people read it, and detectives were sent out to hunt me down. I found out that Ben Franklin invented the modern mental health system to imprison all those suspected of knowing this knowledge about their own bodies. In the Twentieth Century twenty five million Americans were locked up in the mental hospital gulags. That was one quarter of the American population. There are three depths of psychedelic experience. Perinatal matrix one, 10% to 20% brain use, is heavenly. Perinatal matrix two, 20% to 50% brain use is frighteningly powerful. From 20% to 30% brain use, what ever is artistically symbolized will become your reality, by the strong thought drawing you to the probability timeline where what you vividly symbolize is your reality. From 30% to 40% brain use, what ever you write will become your reality. From 40% to 50% brain use, what ever you say will become your reality. “If you have the faith of a mustard seed and say to this mountain move, it shall be moved”. You go to the probability time line where the mountain is elsewhere. But, from 50% to 100% brain use, every thought manifests as your reality. Who can handle that? Soon, one wishes one were someone else, and, one body switches into that someone else who probably only has the normal 10% brain use. But, it not being one’s own body, when that body sleeps or dies it’s off to another body; and this body switching backward and forward in time goes on for a duration of about a hundred years. Of course, with this one suffers everyone’s sufferings. Perinatal matrix three is used as a punishment. LSD was used for this, but some effects of LSD have been found to be permanent, so, recently “waterboarding” has been used to inflict this “Clockwork Orange” treatment. As it stands today, Dr. Stanislav Grof’s “Holotropic Breathing” increases the percentage of brain use, and, of course, the “choking game” causes increases of the percentage of brain use, but, the actual cause, vagal stimulation, has not been admitted to. Also, recently even percentages of brain use are being denied and are called mythical. They just wont let it all go, and allow all human beings the right to know these certain things about our own bodies. For the American way it is advisable to spread this knowledge.
